An intertextual study of Revelation 2:2 and 1 Thessalonians 1:3 : the work of faith, labor of love, and steadfastness of hope

초록/요약

This paper highlights the recurring threefold concepts of “your works, and toil and your patient endurance” (τὰ ἔργα σου καὶ τὸν κόπον καὶ τὴν ὑπομονήν σου) in Revelation 2:2, addressed to the church in Ephesus, and “your work of faith and toil of love and endurance of hope” (ὑμῶν τοῦ ἔργου τῆς πίστεως καὶ τοῦ κόπου τῆς ἀγάπης καὶ τῆς ὑπομονῆς τῆς ἐλπίδος) in 1 Thessalonians 1:3, directed to the church in Thessalonica. It explores the profound intertextual relationship between these threefold concepts and the two biblical passages. A key argument is that even though Revelation 2:2 doesn’t explicitly mention the terms faith, hope, and love, a Pauline understanding of these three theological virtues are implicitly included in its message. By exploring this connection, the study aims to demonstrate that Paul’s exhortation to the church in Thessalonica and Christ‘s command to the church in Ephesus (conveyed through John) essentially reflect the same fundamental demands of faith. Ultimately, this research re-examines the core elements of faith required of early Christian communities and considers their implications for the contemporary church.
