Charis as sacrificial generosity : a devotional reading of grace in 2 Corinthians 8:1–5

초록/요약

This article explores Paul’s theology of giving in 2 Corinthians 8-9, emphasizing that charis (grace) enabled by God manifests in sacrificial giving. Drawing on the example of the Macedonian churches, Paul shows that the true generosity in giving lies not in the amount given but in the giver’s attitude and motivation, highlighting sincerity (haplotēs) and voluntary spontaneity (authairetos). The Macedonian giving out of extreme poverty demonstrates that genuine giving arises not from material surplus or a desire for social recognition but from an outworking of God’s grace. Paul’s poverty relief ministry then is presented not as a mere material aid but as an expression of unity and mutual care among believers, a matter of worship and fellowship. The article argues that, by appealing to the Corinthian church in this way, Paul redirects their focus from external honor to inner integrity and devotion, demonstrating that authentic Christian giving ultimately results in the glory of God.
