The unity of believers in the gospel of John : a theological and missiological exploration

초록/요약

This paper explores the theme of unity in the Gospel of John, focusing on its theological depth, ethical implications, and missional significance. It argues that Johannine unity originates in the relationship between the Father and the Son, is expressed through love and obedience, and culminates in the visible witness of the church to the world. Drawing on key Johannine texts—especially John 17—this study demonstrates that unity is not an institutional or organizational construct but a participatory reality grounded in divine life. The Father-Son relationship serves as both the model and source of believers’ unity, characterized by mutual indwelling, shared glory, and relational fidelity. The paper further contends that true unity among believers is maintained through self-giving love, humility, and obedience to Christ’s teachings, while pride and the pursuit of human glory disrupt it. Finally, it highlights the missional dimension of Johannine unity: the oneness of believers functions as the ultimate testimony to the truth of the gospel—“that the world may believe” (John 17:21). In this way, Johannine unity is revealed as both divine gift and ethical calling, forming the heart of the church’s identity and mission.
