The parable of the soils : a new perspective through Chinese contextualization

초록/요약

In light of the growth of the church in Asia, some scholars attempt to use contextualized biblical research to help Asian Christians think through their faith in a way that causes it to sink down deep roots and grow in the soil of Asia. More biblical scholars highlight the intersection between the text and the current context. Before moving into contextual analysis, this article will first include some exegetical analysis about the parable of the soils in Mark 4:3–9, 13–20. This article is an attempt to understand the parable of the soils through the perspective of Chinese contextualization. This will help Chinese people to view the four types of soil with reference to Chinese characteristics (referring to Chinese uniqueness such as the unique Chinese heritage, tradition, and concepts) and reflect on how these aspects of Chinese culture and tradition influence the Chinese people’s response to the gospel. In order to achieve this task, the article examines the four types of soils in the Chinese context as described in Mark 4:3–9, 13–20: the soil by the path, the soil among rocky places, the soil among thorns, and the good soil. This article will argue that it is easy to find ways in which Jesus’s teaching about the four kinds of soil is relevant for Chinese Christians. Many factors in Chinese culture and tradition influence the response to the gospel, growth in belief, and the final result of bearing fruit.
